I love to share knowledge and resources that have been shared with me. I also love shining a bright spotlight on other, like-minded artists, who also believe in #SharingItForward. I ran across this tip in an artist group earlier today and I loved it! I had to share with you what Photographer, Chris Nickolson of Scottish Photography Network, shared with an artist Facebook group.
Photographic Toning Presets in Photoshop
You know those really cool insta-filters that give images a hip sepia or even vintage vibe? Photoshop actually has a set of similar presets hidden under gradient maps! Here’s how to access them…
Go to Image>Adjustments>Gradient Map.
You will get the following dialogue box.
Click on the drop down arrow and in the upper right hand corner you will notice a little gear…
Click on the gear and you will get the following menu…
At the bottom is a list of all the standard gradient presets that come with Photoshop CS4 or higher. The set that we photographers will probably find most useful is the “Photographic Toning” presets. To load them, click on the name and choose “Append” (This will add these presets into the gradient selections list, instead of replacing them. I find this to be easiest in keeping things straight, as I forget which sets are which when looking for gradients).
When the gradient lists load you have a bunch of new options! Using these gradients you can come up with some beautiful sepia and even cool vintage blue tones.
Chris says, “The photographic toning presets are brilliant, I like to use the Sepia combined with Selenium presets, which has brilliant effects on landscapes and vintage style portraits”.
Added Tip: There are many resources across the web where you can download gradient presets for use in Photoshop. If these presets get you addicted, hit up Google! Load’em up and you can create unique looks for all your portraits!
Thanks Chris for #SharingItForward!
